Who was Sandford Fleming? And who invented worldwide standard time zones?

Image
A Canadian engineer of Scottish birth, Fleming was a prolific designer who was knighted for his accomplishments by Queen Victoria in 1897. Sandford Fleming He was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1827, a period when regions used the solar time to set their own clocks. Fast-forward to Ireland in 1876, when a mistake printed in a timetable caused Fleming to miss his train, an incident which apparently inspired his proposal for the introduction of standardised time. He presented the idea of a worldwide standard time at a meeting of the Royal Canadian Institute (RCI) on February 8, 1879. Fleming advocated for dividing the world into  24  time zones beginning at the Greenwich Meridian and spaced at  15  degree intervals. It followed the introduction of  Greenwich Mean Time  across Great Britain in 1847. His proposal gave way to the International Prime Meridian Conference which convened in 1884 and was attended by 25 nations. It was here that ...

Kesavananda Bharati case of 1973

Kesavananda Bharati v. The State of Kerala and Others (AIR 1973 SC 1461) is a landmark decision of the Supreme Court of India. It is the basis for the power of the Indian judiciary to review, and strike down, amendments to the Constitution of India passed by the Indian parliament which conflicts with or seeks to alter the constitution’s ‘basic structure’. The judgment also defined the extent to which Parliament could restrict the right to property, in pursuit of land reform and the redistribution of large landholdings to cultivators, overruling previous decisions that suggested that the right to property could not be restricted. The case was a culmination of a series of cases relating to limitations to the power to amend the Indian constitution. The 42nd amendment is thought to be the immediate and most direct fall out of the judgement. Apart from it, the judgement cleared the deck for complete legislative authority to amend any part of the constitution except when the amendments are...

Berubari Union Case of 1960

We know that India and Pakistan boundary was fixed by Sir Radcliffe and the line was called Radcliffe Line. However, some disputes arose because of the erroneous depiction of the maps by the Radcliffe Award. One of such disputes was Berubari Dispute. This dispute rose due to an omission in the written text. Radcliffe had divided the district of Jalpaigudi between India and Pakistan by awarding some thanas to one country and others to the other country. The boundary line was determined on the basis of the boundaries of the thanas. In describing this boundary, Radcliffe omitted to mention one Thana. Berubari Union No. 12 lies within Jalpaigudi thana which was awarded to India. However, the omission of the Thana Boda and the erroneous depiction on the map enabled Pakistan to claim that a part of Berubari belonged to it. This dispute was resolved by Nehru-Noon Agreement of 1958, whereby half of Berubari Union No. 12 was to be given to Pakistan and the other half adjacent to India was to b...

What is Water shortage?

Image
Water shortage happens when an area does not have enough water to meet the needs of the people who live there. A shortage happens when there is too much exploitation of water in terms of use or there is not enough supply. Now you will say that we have a lot of water, we have huge oceans, big seas, big rivers, pond, lakes etc. Yes, we have 97% of water available in oceans but that water is not fit for drinking as it is salty. Only,2.8% of water available is fresh water present in rivers, groundwater, glaciers etc. That can be used for consumption. In India, average women travel around 3 to 4 km daily to bring water to their home. It has been projected that per capita surface water availability is likely to be reduced to 1401 m 3  and 1191 m 3  by the years 2025 and 2050, respectively. The Per capita water availability in the year 2010 was 1588 m 3  against 5200 m 3  of the year 1951 in the country .  Shocked!!! Thirsty Water: Every Drop Counts ...
